Description
The spot shows a child having a crisis of confidence at a school concert and being encouraged by his teacher, before cutting to a sexually abused teen talking to a Barnardo’s project worker about her experiences. It ends with the line: "With the right support, children can conquer anything."
The film draws a parallel between the support that most children get from teachers and the support that Barnardo's provides for the children who have no-one.
Execution
When it came to casting, our intention was to avoid any kind of 'performance', focusing on finding people that could immerse themselves into what it is really like to be that person within that situation. To get this right, the director and casting director work-shopped scenes with people from all sections of society up and down the UK.
On our last day of casting in Glasgow, we found and cast Morgan Campbell, a shy and nervous fourteen-year-old. This was a very exciting venture for everyone, as this was Morgan’s first acting job. During the shoot, The director did many takes of Morgan’s scene – it was exhausting for her but she remained focused. In her last take she fell to pieces, which was an incredibly raw and emotionally charged moment for everyone to be a part of.
For the director, the challenge was to connect the audience with the characters and take them on a journey in a very short amount of time - the film needed to be cinematically compelling but also be very intimate and feel real. The director’s central reference was Magnolia - the raw and affecting performances at it’s center and the multiple stories; interwoven in a bold and cinematic fashion.
