Overview

Background:

Free Press Unlimited fights for free press worldwide and raises awareness about the growing problem of censorship and the 363 journalists currently imprisoned. Censorship and the imprisonment of journalists have a long history, and it is difficult to raise awareness for each new case.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work e.g. local legislation, cultural norms, a national holiday or religious festival that may have a particular meaning.

The Erased Font was released on World Press Freedom Day May 3, 2023. The aim of World Press Freedom Day is to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press. The issue, however, is that readers often don’t notice when journalists are erased since their stories simply disappear. We developed the Erased Font in response to this, making people aware of what happens when journalists are erased.

Tell the jury about the typography.

“The Erased" is an innovative font that aims to expose censorship by erasing one word for each imprisoned journalist. It cleverly leverages ligatures, typically used for better readability, to visually emphasize censorship. Each chosen word represents a journalist's struggle against oppressive regimes and includes variations for capitalization and plurality. To ensure its impact in diverse contexts, the font is available in six languages, featuring over 4000 handcrafted erased words. Through simple strings of code on the open-source platform Github we made the font accessible for the public, eliminating the need for downloads. This automatically installed the "erase toggle" that helped spread censorship awareness on global news outlets. To ensure we wouldn't disrupt website layouts when applying the font we opted to use Google’s Noto Sans. One of the most used fonts on the web, present on 2.24 billion sites.
