Summary of the work

An-Nahar was established in 1933 by the Tueni family and characterized by a liberal orientation, which, without denying its Arab roots, looks to Europe and the West as a political and cultural reference point. It has a long history of standing with the Lebanese people in the face of adversity and for being outspoken against injustice.

As political oppression and government failure continued to grow in Lebanon, so did the fear of addressing these threats, and for good reason. Speaking up came with a challenging set of repercussions: intimidation, persecution, imprisonment and in many cases, assassinations.

Over the years, voluminous voices had been terminated, either by the killing of journalists or by shutting down publications. In fact, An-Nahar’s very own editor-in-chief had been assassinated in 2005.

Without the ability to represent its diversity, Lebanon, a democratic republic, became a realm where injustice reigned. An-Nahar, recognizing the urgency of this predicament, and wanted to give Lebanon its freedom back.

When “The Newspapers inside the Newspaper” edition sat on the shelves of corner stores across Lebanon, it seemed like its ordinary self. But as readers flipped through the pages, much to their surprise, a poignant collection of articles from journalists and newspapers that had been forcibly silenced or shut down turned up. Each spread displayed a previously extinct newspaper, from diverse ends of the political spectrum, with articles written by the same journalists that were once at the helm of these papers.

In this selfless act of encouragement, one edition covered seven newspapers, and gave journalists the freedom to voice their opinions, without fear. An-Nahar became more than just a newspaper; it emerged as a symbol of resilience against suppression and engaged with people beyond its regular readers, allowing them to celebrate the diversity that Lebanon had been known for.
