Description

Brazil is living in an age of epic violence against women: 86% of women report being sexually harassed. But why is this still happening? It’s simple: people are turning a blind eye to this crime. To prove it, RedeTV! – one of the Brazil’s largest national TV channels – mounted a daring and provocative experiment: it broadcasted live scenes of sexual harassment during its most-watched programs to more than a hundred million viewers over the span of one week. And a scary fact emerged: none of the 162 million viewers noticed it or made any report or mention of it. That's right! During the broadcasts, RedeTV! received no complaints, no posts, no tweets, nothing.

Execution

During the international week for the elimination of violence against women, RedeTV! – one of the Brazil’s largest national TV channels – broadcasted live sexual harassment scenes, staged in the background of prime time programming, to the entire country. Then, on “Super Pop,” RedeTV!’s most-watched program, the truth was revealed, sparking a national conversation about the subject, and inviting women across the country to report sexual harassment wherever and whenever they encounter it. The subject became the main topic in the channel’s editorial agenda on live TVand took over social conversations on internet. The movement became so big that no one could turn a blind eye to it.

Outcome

RedeTV! – one of the largest national TV channels in Brazil – sparked a wide discussion around the subject of sexual harassment during the international week for the elimination of violence against women, a discussion that caught the attention of national media. The live scenes of sexual harassment impacted 162 million viewers directly, reaching more than 78% of the country, and generating more than USD 20 MM in earned media. A thousand women across the country, empowered by the campaign, came forward to join the movement and publicly report their personal experiences with sexual harassment on social media and live TV. Most importantly, RedeTV! inspired the commitment of countless people to work to ensure that sexual harassment never goes unnoticed again.
