Background
Few people don’t know about the tragedy that occurred on April 26, 1986 at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One night turned the place of the future into a place of memory reminding the world of the price of human error. But few people know that the cities of Chornobyl Exclusion Zone are gradually disappearing: they are being destroyed by time and absorbed by nature. This means that over time, people won’t be able to see the direct consequences of the disaster that changed the world.
We were briefed by Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine to create the Exclusion Zone’s branding to draw attention to the disappearing places of memory. So people could have a chance to see everything with their own eyes and learn an important lesson: every action has a consequence.
Describe the creative idea
We needed to find a strong visual image that would make people think. And realized that a standard logo won’t have enough power: a static icon simply can not contain such an important message. So, we created the first vanishing logo in the world.
Describe the execution
The basis for our logo is the shape of the fourth reactor, which was the place where
it all began. This is the starting point for the logo, as if it was Chernobyl’86 logo. Every year the image changes and gradually disappears. The end point of the logo's existence is 2064, when Chornobyl Power Plant will be completely decommissioned. This way we close this cycle of history and open some space for a new one.
While developing this idea we made stress on materials which either relevant to time insight, collectors items from different years, things one would need when traveling to the Exclusion Zone.
Vanishing brand of the Exclusion Zone was launched on the 26th of April, the 35rd anniversary of Chornobyl tragedy.
List the results
We saw a dramatic increase in search statistics as well as world's attention to the Exclusion zone. Lots of discussions were raised again: Is it safe now? What exactly is happening at the Exclusion Zone right now? What is the best way to visit Chornobyl? Chornobyl has got huge attention once again, but this time in a good way. So we define our challenge as completed.
