Save Ralph is a stop-motion animated documentary-style short film. The film features HSI’s campaign spokesbunny Ralph as he goes through his daily routine as a “tester” in a lab. #SaveRalph campaign tackles the disturbing issue of animal testing in an originally unexpected way—using the story of one bunny to shine a light on the plight of countless rabbits and other animals suffering in laboratories around the world, engaging viewers to help ban cosmetic animal testing. The film stars Taika Waititi as Ralph, with Ricky Gervais, Zac Efron, Olivia Munn, Pom Klementieff and Tricia Helfer, and additional versions produced in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Vietnamese with George Lopez, WIlmer Valderrama, Rosario Dawson, Rodrigo Santoro and others voicing characters in those languages.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Though animal testing is outlawed in 41 countries, it remains legal in 80% of the world. Humane Society International’s goal with the #SaveRalph campaign is to end cosmetic testing on animals globally. Every year, untold thousands of rabbits just like Ralph, as well as guinea pigs, hamsters and mice, are subjected to cruel chemical poisoning tests for ingredients that make beauty products.

#SaveRalph campaign to ban cosmetic testing on animals is focused on 16 countries: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, ten Southeast Asian nations and the United States. Since its April 2021 premiere, Save Ralph went viral, being viewed many million times with tremendous impact, motivating millions of people around the world to sign HSI’s petition to outlaw this cruel and obsolete practice, propelling Mexico to become the first North American country to ban cosmetic testing on animals, and is helping advance legislative efforts in several other countries.
