There are many complexities in creating a film which doubles as a hearing test.

Working with audiologists to analyse patient audiograms, we were able to develop hearing profiles that showed what would or wouldn't be picked up at varying levels of hearing loss, down to the accuracy of specific words and letter sounds.

We used this knowledge to develop a script that was considered across all four levels of hearing loss (normal, mild, medium and severe), mapping out on each script which words would be harder to hear.

We manipulated dialogue and sound effects to confuse those with hearing loss, while remaining audible for those with normal hearing.

We selected locations with higher instances of background noise to increase interference (busy restaurant, TV room, rainy night).

Background noises from the scene locations were added over dialogue - leading those with hearing loss to misinterpret certain parts of the storyline.

Audience

Australia is in the midst of a silent epidemic. 3.5 million people are living with hearing loss however 85% are not being treated. Recommendation of Cochlear implants from practitioners is low. For this reason, Cochlear made the decision to communicate direct-to-consumers for the first time.

BriefExplanation

'Does Love Last Forever' follows Jake and Xanthe over four decades from when they first fall in love, develop a shared love of music, mature and have kids, all the way to the present day where the film resolves by posing the question: 'Did love last?' depending on the viewers hearing ability, the film has two endings.

For those who can hear well, their relationship remains loving. But for those hard of hearing, the couple's relationship deteriorates.

Real patient data from audiograms informed the script that used certain words with consonants such as T, S and F - which are harder to hear due to their higher frequency. The ability to lip read was gradually taken away, body language was choreographed to be interpreted negatively, and ambient background noises were introduced to create confusion for those with hearing loss. 'Does Love Last Forever?' is a hearing test in disguise.
