Health innovations at Cannes Lions 2024 included a voice-powered diagnostic tool, a digital watch add-on for speech disabilities and a story to make MRI sounds less scary. This collection highlights five solutions that used technology to transform diagnosis, treatment or patient care.

Voice 2 Diabetes | KVI Brave Fund Inc | Klick Health, Toronto | 2024

This uses AI to analyse people’s voices to see if they have type 2 diabetes. It’s already been effective in India and has the potential to scale to other markets, with estimated savings of $32bn on costlier diagnosis tools. “This allows people to take healthcare into their own hands,” said Juror Jody Samuels Ike, Global Innovation and Marketing Executive, Board Advisor and Consultant. “Giving people agency is a trend that I’d like to see more in healthcare.” It won the Innovation Lions Grand Prix.

Airquity | EarSwitch | Havas Lynx, Manchester | 2024

Earswitch’s ‘Airquity’ shows how to tackle racial bias in diagnostic testing. It lowers respiratory death rates among Black people by measuring blood oxygen from inside the ear and checking it against racially inclusive health metrics. It’s been accepted onto a scheme to fast-track it into the NHS, the UK’s healthcare system.

Samsung launched an app on the Galaxy Watch that uses haptic therapy to assist the 100 million people with speech disabilities. More than 100 speech therapy and audiology professionals in Spain and Portugal are using this digital therapy with their patients. Brand Experience & Activation Juror Nayaab Rais, Senior Creative Director at FP7 McCann, noted: “The fact that this took speech therapy outside the walls of the office and brought it to people on their wrists was pretty cool.”

AT&T 5G Helmet | AT&T | Translation, New York | 2024

AT&T created a 5G-powered American football helmet with an augmented reality lens so D/deaf athletes could see coaches’ calls. Generating 4.5bn earned impressions and positive social sentiment of 93.6%, it was approved by the National Collegiate Athletics Association to be used in every game in 2024. It demonstrates how to add personality to an intangible service through a practical product demo.

Pharma Lions Grand Prix winner ‘Magnetic Stories’ generated a children’s story that incorporated the sounds from an MRI scan. A lesson in how patient-led approaches can transform medical experiences, the story turned the sounds into robots or spaceships, making MRI scans less scary for children. Siemens Healthineers, the company behind it, is now developing an integrated AI that writes stories in real time based on any scan.
