Background

December 22 is the only day of the year when every TV news in Spain will be leading with images of people celebrating. They are the winners of Spain’s Christmas lottery, a tradition that is as enshrined in Christmas celebrations as turrón or the Three Kings. In fact, it´s a draw with more than 200 years of tradition.

Even though, Spain’s Christmas lottery doesn’t tend to turn anyone into a multimillionaire, unlike other lotteries, it’s a practice extended to the whole country. Why? Because this lottery has something special, something that no other lottery in the world has: it is shared. Everyone shares a lottery ticket. People love to play in groups: with their family, with their friends, with their co-workers, with the basket team, ...

The satisfaction of sharing a number and the illusion of making your dreams come true, it's almost as important as winning the prize.

Execution

Juan, a lonely and miserly man, prefers to play the Christmas Lottery alone rather than with friends, as everyone else does. That night something magical will happen to him: as he’s watching the movie "Groundhog Day", Juan gets trapped on December 22nd: The day he wins the Christmas Lottery.

He lives the same day over and over again. He leverages his knowledge of the winning number by buying more lottery tickets each day. In a comedy tone, he will live and celebrate his success more and more. Until one day, he feels fed up and decides to keep just one lottery ticket. Instead of buying more, he will share the one he kept with a stranger.

This way he discovers that all the money in the world is worthless if you don’t have anyone to share it with. That’s how he breaks the curse and gets out of the loop.
