KING, Stockholm / THE SUSTAINABLE SEAS INITIATIVE / 2017
The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s worst polluted oceans with algae blooms taking over huge parts of it every summer. They suck the oxygen out of the sea which leads to dead seabed’s and threatened fish stocks. If nothing is done the whole ocean could die. Yet the issue isn’t prioritized by the politicians.
The Baltic Sea Foundation Sustainable Seas is a small organisation, with very limited funds, that wanted to raise awareness around the issue amongst both the public and policymakers.
We filled a billboard with water from the Baltic Sea and placed it in front of the Swedish parliament. As expected, just like in the Baltic Sea, algae started blooming in the billboard. Because of this our message grew stronger every day during the 11 days the billboard was up. In the end the oxygen in the water in the billboard had been suck out by the algeas, leaving a green gooey substances. Which is exactly what happens in the Baltic Sea every summer.
We filled a billboard with water from the Baltic Sea and placed it in front of the Swedish parliament. Just like in the Baltic Sea, algae started to bloom. During the course of eleven days the public could witness the transformation inside the billboard. The campaign continued online where we encouraged people to take a stand and sign our petition.
