Taylor James used a variety of rendering techniques to realize the Bayer Glass Heart animation piece. The model was like a sculpture, and the overall construction had to be carefully considered to allow the piece to read very deliberately from specific angles, but not compromising the animation. The camera animation needed to be pre-visualised to show movement about the space in a cohesive and natural way.
Extensive fluid simulations were used to give a reality to the movement of the liquids, and we used custom droplet animations driven through the shader's Index Of Refraction channel to give the realistic droplet effects on the surface. The real challenge was to render such a vast glass surface, as the reflection and refraction calculations were very processor intensive. This meant we added camera blurring effects like Depth of Field by way of a Z Depth pass to speed up the final comp.
