OVERVIEW

Description

We told stories of how people that stood for and preached peace - the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa - turned to violence because of a mosquito. As the shock of seeing these peace-loving people resort to violence lulled people into silence, we introduced them to a few things that they could do to control the menace of mosquitoes and water stagnation. We showed them how they could ensure that history as we know it, would not change.

Execution

The artists, along with their entourage and support crews, travelled across one district each week. They stopped at various villages along the way. Their very appearance drew in crowds. And their performance captivated them.

In four bursts between 5th September, 2016 to 21st January, 2017, the theatre group travelled through 16 districts in the Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. They covered over a hundred villages. They performed several hundred times to a rapt audience.

Outcome

Following the street plays, every single village we touched gathered up and started clean-up acts. People actively volunteered, disposed old containers and tires safely, filled and drained puddles, and even petitioned government representatives for repairing drains and other water resources.
