Execution

We handed out matchboxes in bars and restaurants that had designated smoking areas. Inside the boxes we could see replicas of some venues with the following message: Any closed space is too small for cigarettes. The message warns about the ineffectiveness of designated smoking areas and the dangers of second-hand smoking. The same message was advertised on press and billboards.

Outcome

Because it is an NGO and an anti-smoking campaign, we don’t have a result composed by numbers. How many people stopped smoking in closed places or how many people stopped going to places where smoking is permitted? That’s impossible to measure. What we do have is some data on the campaign: We handed out matchboxes in bars and restaurants that had designated smoking areas. More than 15,000 matchboxes were handed out in bars, restaurants and nightclubs. A total of 100 commercial establishments in 8 different boroughs of São Paulo. The public’s response was great, including smokers.
