Artistic Expression - Inspiring a new mindset
Expanding on the original mural planned for the area, three artists (one local and two
international) came to the heart of the affected neighbourood to convey three different
interpretations of hope, strength and positivity. A community workshop was run by the local artist to bring people an outlet to express themselves and bond over their experiences together, reminding each other of the strength found in unity.
Live Event - Inspiring new actions
In order to engage the community further, a live event was devised to coincide with the
unveiling of the murals that would drive commerce back into local businesses and
therefore the community. Local businesses and individuals including food and beverage
vendors, local DJs and a local charity (working in photography for the blind) all came
together to celebrate this neighbourhood, its renewed colour and bring city crowds to it
once more.
Execution
Immediately following the earthquake plans took shape to see how we could help the area.
We were cautious to give the area time to recover from the initial trauma and to be able to
communicate their state of mind and challenges and it soon became clear that the best way
we could help was to bring life, colour and people back to this previously very popular area.
Over a matter of weeks our local artist and 2 international ones were on board, a mural and
an event venue were secured in the neighbourhood, all production elements were sourced
and underway and the event was communicated widely but kept largely within the city to
increase local awareness which was our ultimate goal.
