Overview

Background

The way we work has been fundamentally changed by technology. But the way we use and plan our physical spaces hasn’t changed at all. Meaning our spaces often let us down, sitting unoccupied or over overcrowded, with environments that are negatively impacting our creativity and productivity.

We’re still trading spaces based on square metres and location, instead of using meaningful information about the quality of spaces where we live and work. Beringer sensors are designed to change that, giving people in shared spaces the information they need to create better working and living environments.

We designed and launched a sensor-as-service model in under under four months, including developing the original concept, manufacturing the product, building a new brand from scratch and launching to market.

Idea

We had to create a brand that spoke to the established structures of the industry but that also clearly communicated we were an innovative, dynamic tech brand with a vision for the future. So we let the data lead the way. We made sure that every element of the design work intuitively reflected the value of our data-driven insights.

We kept things simple, choosing to represent fairly complex data in visually accessible way so that every occupant and building owner can quickly understand the information at-a-glance. For Beringar’s system to work, the data needs to be accessible to everyone, so they can actively improve the environments we live and work in. This was the driving principle behind our design work.

Strategy

After an initial production run, there are now more than 350 Beringar Hex 1 Sensors currently installed. There are 1,000 more ordered, and 2,000 installations expected by the end of 2019. The sensors have launched in the UK, Germany, and Lebanon, and will be launched soon in France, Belgium, Portugal, Norway, the USA, Russia, and Japan. Beringar has begun a partnership with British Land, one of the largest property development and investment companies in the United Kingdom.

Beringar is creating a new culture of connected spaces. Our sensor is a survey device, not a surveillance device. We’re here to encourage clever environments that enhance our lives. Beringar is that start of a three-step journey that will transform real estate for the 21st century:

Awareness: the building becomes aware of humans

Automation: the building takes care of humans

Autonomy: the building takes care of itself

Execution

Brand system

We created instantly understandable icons, animations and marks that could live throughout the product ecosystem. We integrated the physical and digital design to feel part of a cohesive system and clear brand identity.

Logo

The logo is based on a 3D perspective of an isometric grid (used by industry professionals for building plans). This element shows how Beringar aims to give a fresh perspective.

Product

The product is neutral enough to fit into any environment, but not so innocuous that people feel like they are under surveillance. LED indicators put users at ease by providing visual references, so they understand data at a glance.

Website and dashboard

The simple, clear interfaces were designed with a restrained colour palette that feels fresh but also informative. At every stage in the design we made the UX easy to understand, to reduce the complexity of building management.
