We listen in on a chapter from an audiobook. A well-known and well-loved classic. But shortly into the excerpt, the story takes an unexpected turn. A native advertisement, delivered by a beloved character, solicits a fictitious product right in the middle of the story. The jarring product placement is an unwanted disruption that takes us momentarily out of the novel. In the end, an announcer explains that this is a cautionary tale of what might happen if the government doesn’t provide funding for our public libraries.
