Description
Since the 2012 presidential election, 868 voting stations were cut in low-income and minority neighborhoods. Boost Mobile stores are located in these neighborhoods. So we did the unprecedented: We turned Boost Mobile Stores into voting stations on Election Day.
Making this possible was no easy task. This film tells the story of the obstacles the team confronted, shines a light on why it is so difficult to make change in the American election system, and ultimately calls on other organizations to join the fight.
Execution
Turning Boost Mobile stores into official voting stations was a monumental challenge. Especially when confronted with voter suppression in many areas of the country. But we managed to find several election officials who shared our belief that the system needed change because all Americans deserve equal voting access. Boost Mobile stores became a part of the voting experience in America. For one day, those stores belonged to the people as part of the democratic system.
Outcome
On November 8th 2016, people voted in Boost Mobile stores across the United States, marking an unprecedented partnership between government and a corporation in an election. While long lines persisted in many low-income neighborhoods, in Boost precincts, voting ran smoothly and voter turnout increased 23% over the 2012 presidential election.
We also worked with hip-hop artists to inspire people to get out and vote. An event hosted with Chance the Rapper led to the highest early voting turnout in Chicago history.
