OVERVIEW

Execution

Using abstract patterns and animation to convey tangible meaning behind dynamic data sets, the Statoil story is generatively told in a manner that is unique each time the viewer experiences the piece. Built as a focal point that compliments the interior environment it lives in, the piece acts as a stimulating, engaging and informing welcome, telling the Statoil story of an international gas and oil company driven by innovation and technology capability and competence.

“ To get true meaning and feeling we want people to interact with our brand rather than experience it passively. We want people to interact with Statoil while reflecting upon their place in the world so that they get more of a sense of the significance of our global brand. The brandwall gives us a perfect canvas to do this;  to tell our story in a tangibly meaningful manner to visitors worldwide.

The open nature of the platform, with its flexibility to take-in, transform and visualise many data sources, allows us to easily and creatively tell the on-going Statoil narrative.

We set the task of making a dynamic, living piece of art to tell the evolving story about our global capabilities and competencies in innovation and technology. Watching visitors experience with the brandwall we see that we have achieved this, and have created a platform to continue achieving this with the data of the world.”

Carl Fredrik Olsen, Creative Director, Statoil

Outcome

Real time dynamic and static data set themes with attributes that felt real, true and meaningful were used. These included:?

Production output for oil and gas installations by location

Global energy consumption by power source and region

Weather data by location

Viewer movement behaviour and interaction around the piece

Realtime visualisations are developed as custom built software on top of Cinder, an open source C++ library for creative coding. The software is responsible for generating new visualisations on-the-fly as it continuously gets new data and content from a back end system maintained by Statoil themselves. The back end system functions as a central tool for gathering, publishing and differentiating data to the different endpoints - Statoil offices around the world - leaving the viewer with a sense of place.
