Description
We felt that VR was the perfect vehicle to achieving a sense of wonderment, awe, and technological feat with audiences in order to position the film as something thrilling and new for Marvel.
In order to transport real people to new, otherworldly dimensions straight out of the film, a custom VR experience, painted in Google Tilt Brush by 3 artists from around the globe, was set up in public spaces in New York, London, and Hong Kong.
Real people were then welcomed to step into these surreal worlds in VR as others looked on and lined up for an experience they never expected. This was all filmed in cutting edge mixed reality so that in post we could composite real people into the trippy, artist-created dimensions--a visual effect usually reserved for movie stars--to make it all feel as tangible as Dr. Strange’s character experiences.
Execution
The live event was executed in New York, London, and Hong Kong over the course of 2 weeks. A small tech and film crew accompanied the VR set up, which was placed in public areas in these cities. Each live VR experience took place, and was filmed, over the course of a full day.
This content was then edited, using post production rotoscoping to create the effect of real people embedded in these Tilt Brush dimensions. A montage “hero” video was used to showcase this content and 3 360 degree videos- one for each artist-rendered dimension- were created and uploaded to YouTube.
The videos were uploaded to Marvel owned social platforms and a modest media buy and PR push were used to distribute.
