Description
Brandon works with one base ingredient - cocoa - and from this he creates infinite textures, tastes and colours. So, we designed branding and packaging inspired by those same principles. Each package starts with one constant ingredient - a simple white box. Then, these packages are personalized in batches by drip-painting them in colour schemes that reflect the chocolates inside. Also, the custom logotype letterforms were drawn from scratch, based on the geodesic shape of the chocolates. In essence, every design decision was directly inspired by the product itself.
Execution
In the absence of a production budget, the client agreed to invest time. After much testing, our signature painting technique was finalized. In a dedicated painting room, the ready-made white boxes were drip-painted by hand in batches of 400. Once dry they were packed and sealed with a branded sticker. For all collections, the primary paint colour was black, accompanied by splatters of an accent colour that identified the specific flavour inside. This approach turned our simple boxes into unique containers suitable for the little pieces of chocolate art that you can eat.
Outcome
The boxes were immediately noticed by the Toronto press, and customers began sharing photos of the packaging on social media right away. Momentum continued and eventually national and international press began featuring the product, including Wallpaper magazine, Monocle, Vice and Azure among others. Demand has been so high that the company is moving to a larger facility in Summer 2017. In just over a year, what started as a two-person operation in a 400 square-foot shop is now a seven-person business in a 2800 square-foot facility - and the best part is the boxes are still painted by hand.
