The young man was scripted to deliver lines that could make him seem like an asshole. However, that’s not how we wanted him to appear. So, we looked to cast someone who could deliver those lines but still be endearing. The young actor we found has the likeable, nerdish quality of a young Michael Cera. He’s not cool enough to be an asshole. He’s just awkward. And he says awkward things sometimes. To heighten the discomfort of the situation for the boy, the dad needed to have that intimidating dad quality. He’s the dad you don’t want to mess with, and yet this boy seems to be doing just that. The actor we found had all this and more. He has a protective dad energy that would make viewers understand nobody should mess his daughter. A man who can say everything he needs to say, with just one stern look.
