OVERVIEW

Description

The creative idea was to give Star Wars fans an opportunity they could only dream of: to become real-life Jedi Masters.

Execution

We created discovertheforce.co.za, a 3D HTML5 WebGL microsite that gave Star Wars fans the ability to use the ‘Force*’.

With simple hand gestures, fans could use the Force to explore the galaxy, test their Star Wars knowledge, vie for the title of the ultimate fan and get info about the channel—all without using their mouse.

This was made possible with a motion displacement algorithm, which enabled each fan’s webcam to detect movement, and the microsite to respond accordingly.

*The Force is what gives Star Wars characters powers, including telekinesis.

Outcome

Star Wars fans gave the site a galactic thumbs up.

More than 64 000 people visited the microsite in a four-week period, with the average user staying for over 5 minutes.

Discovertheforce.co.za created a great deal of hype and conversation around the channel, helping it become M-Net’s most successful pop-up channel ever.

But most importantly, we enabled everyday ‘Jedi Masters’ to awaken their force.
