Background

(1)Situation: Among the 298 million minors in China, 63% live in rural towns in central and western regions. However, nearly 80% of high-quality educational resources are concentrated in the developed cities along the eastern coast. This situation makes many things that are taken for granted by children in the east, an unattainable dream for children in central and western regions.

(2)Brief:The well-known Chinese internet company Tencent hopes to lead the way in promoting the balanced development of urban and rural education, helping children in rural towns achieve their dreams. They also hope to spread this charitable action further, to draw more attention to the issue of urban-rural education disparity.

(3)Objectives:Therefore, Tencent hopes to create a short creative story video, in conjunction with actions to support educational facilities in the central and western regions. This initiative aims to attract more societal attention and jointly assist rural children in fulfilling their dreams.

Execution

In terms of overall tone, we opted for rich and highly saturated colors to create more intense visual effects, making the scenes vivid and dynamic. Additionally, we blended the traditional Chinese ink painting concept of empty or blank spaces within the composition into our design, using natural elements like sky, mountains, and clouds extensively. This integration of light, expressive colors with the overall scene creates a picturesque, poetic quality.

For detailed rendering, each part of the film features distinct color tones, evolving with the storyline and the protagonist’s emotions, enhancing the mood and emotional impact. For instance, warm yellows and vibrant oranges at the start emphasize the protagonist's active pursuit of goals. Upon facing failure, we used deep blues to reflect despondency, while subtle yellow hints in the background not only serve as artistic embellishments but also symbolize hope, hinting at an upcoming twist in the plot.

Outcome

This heartwarming animation, full of creativity and childlike wonder, quickly became a sensation on Tencent's social media platforms. It garnered over 110 million total views and 1.53 million interactions, with just the reach on WeChat Moments exceeding 52.56 million. Millions of users became aware of the imbalance in urban-rural education and were inspired to help rural children fulfill their dreams.

Like the little penguin bringing the city's ferris wheel to the mountains, Tencent has brought high-quality educational resources from the southeast coast to remote western villages. By August 2023, Tencent had built 35 future sports fields and 36 future classrooms for urban and rural children across 17 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, offering over 60,000 sessions in gamified coding, 3D design, and more, benefiting over 2.6 million teachers and students.

More and more children are stepping out of their mountains and rivers, discovering a broader world and their endless potential.
