Overview

Description

Although kabuki is considered by many Japanese to be a serious, "classical" form of dramatic art, it was originally a form of popular entertainment. The shows were enjoyed by townspeople of all classes, and the actors were the pop stars of the day, known not only for their singing and dancing skill, but also for their elaborate fashions and bohemian lifestyles. In creating these posters, we sought to reflect this history, and the unconventional, free-spirited origins of Japan's most famous dramatic art form.
