“Backlighting” a wave is impossible in the ocean. Shooting in Slater’s unique wave pool gave us 360 degree access to the wave and an unprecedented creative opportunity. We were able to shoot the same wave, over and over again, from multiple angles throughout the night. Electric Wave marks the first ever surf film to be backlit. This uniquely complex lighting design brought the ethereal qualities that define Electric Wave to life.
Moreover, Electric Wave is the first ever choreographed short surf film. Daniel Askill designed a synchronized line across the wave. He brought an interpretive, arthouse vision of the sport’s creative potential to the process.
These are firsts in the world of surf cinematography. Electric Wave lays claim to them all. This film came out of the unknown, brought the surf and creative worlds to a short but powerful stop and redefined the creative potential of a genre of film.
