OVERVIEW

Background

In Germany, there is an ongoing debate about how to deal with a (slowly) growing number of refugees and migrants. As in other European countries, more and more right-wing groups and parties are gaining popularity. The editors of the Tagesspiegel see it as their civil obligation to represent a liberal and cosmopolitan Germany.

Execution

This radio campaign for the TAGESSPIEGEL, one of Germanys biggest liberal quality newspapers based in Berlin, is a statement against prejudices and xenophobia.

In each of the the spots we hear a speaking man with a strong non-German accent in a deep and slowly manner. We hear intense reverberation effects – it sounds as if the man spoke in a giant hall. Totally harmless everyday-sentences like "Hello. I am Abdallah. I want to introduce myself. I am your new neighbour." now become quite threatening. No wonder, because in empty xenophobic heads there's a lot of reverberation ...: "In empty heads everything sounds threatening. For a daily refill read the TAGESSPIEGEL."
