Background

Modern gamers - who play, stream, create content, chat and perform other tasks on their PCs simultaneously - need a powerful processor chip to have the ultimate gaming experiences, with high quality graphics and minimal lag time. But ‘enthusiast gamers’ tend to be sceptical about laptop performance (versus PC desktop performance).

Intel wanted to prove to gamers that their latest laptop CPU could provide the power and performance of a desktop, anywhere. Our brief was to show them that even when gamers are out and about, away from their stable desktop setup at home, they can still enjoy the same level of experience.

Idea

To demonstrate the power and performance of Intel’s CPU chip, we devised a plan to put it to the ultimate test, with the help of the gaming community.

We built a one-of-a-kind mobile streaming rig, gave it to popular gaming influencer DrLupo and invited him on a secret mission. Introducing… DrLupo In the Escape.

Armed with the mobile streaming rig, DrLupo was sent to an abandoned warehouse, which mirrored the dystopian urban environment of the game, ‘Escape from Tarkov,’ where he was challenged to livestream his gameplay for 5 hours. But this was no ordinary gaming session. As DrLupo played, we deployed a variety of weird and wonderful stunts in the physical space which audiences could vote on via Twitch, to distract Lupo from the game, from flashbangs to a marching band, even a ‘wild’ bear! We showed that despite all the obstacles, Lupo and his laptop’s performance never dropped.

Strategy

Our strategy was to demonstrate the powerful performance of Intel’s chip to an ‘enthusiast gamer’ audience, and what better way to do that than to put it to the test in an extreme environment. If it could perform in an abandoned warehouse, far from the usual stable conditions that a typical livestream would take place, then it could perform anywhere.

And what better person to put it to the test than DrLupo, a renowned gaming influencer, who is a gaming enthusiast himself – making him the perfect, authentic fit to perform the challenge at hand.

We also knew that the best way to prove the power of Intel’s chip to the discerning ‘enthusiast gamers’ audience, was to get them in on the challenge. By making the activation interactive, gamers could help put DrLupo and the technology through the ultimate test.

Execution

Through the 5-hour Twitch livestream, DrLupo was challenged to play the game ‘Escape from Tarkov’ in a tough physical environment, with every distraction technique possible deployed upon him.

As the drama unfolded, fuelled by chat comments and interactions, he was genuinely surprised and bemused at the stunts performed before him, many of which echoed the in-game experience: eerie noises, loud explosions, a roaming bear, marching band, food and drink from the game, etc.

The audience was invited to vote to determine which stunts played out and when, revelling in the power that they had to determine what happened. To add to the experience, DrLupo’s gameplay success was rewarded with food and drink (designed to replicate those found in the game itself) and a better gaming chair. We deployed a mysterious gaming character to interact with DrLupo along the way, and blended the physical and digital worlds to further confuse him.

Outcome

• 243,589 livestream views

• 73,408 hours watched

• Record audience participation

• 63% audience increase vs average audience

• DrLupo’s most watched livestream ever

• A huge amount of kudos and love for Intel in raising the bar of livestream activations as shown by the hugely positive chat comments throughout the livestream (some examples > “Clap for Intel for putting this together” / “Thank you Intel” / “THAT WAS AMAZING” / “Best stream ever” / “I do believe this has been the weirdest stream ever, love it” / “Absolutely insane”)

• DrLupo himself saying “This was the craziest set of events I’ve ever been a part of.”
