Description

Makoto Azuma, a renowned botanist and flower artist based in Tokyo, has been acclaimed to surprise his fans with his experimental creations, constantly challenging the tradition form of Japanese flower arrangement known as IKEBANA.

His strong wish is to surprise the whole world by showing two things ;

“the thing never existed before” / “the precious moment of transient life”

However, our tradition of 600 years was also extreme and unfamiliar to younger generation today.

We set out on an unprecedented endeavor to explore beyond this most cherished tradition.

Execution

A 50 year-old BONSAI tree and a bouquet of 30 different forms of life were launched 30,000m high into the space on a specialized vessel. EXOBIOTANICA (exobiota / botanical) has been taking a flight to outer space away from life on earth to breathe new life into a traditional art form. Super high resolution cameras equipped on the vessel captured an image every second, creating 12,000 art pieces of the flight. Such pieces were released on the web site, which could be purchased online.

Outcome

Even though the tree and flowers were lifeless, we could give them eternity by capturing every form by second and creating art pieces of precious moments ; transient beauty under the punitive environment in outer space. Also we could bring them to whole world.

This project had a significant impact as it attracted worldwide and widely reported by many medium such as Nature Magazine.
