The idea was adding a new component to the pretty established timeslize effect, by creating a datamosh effect as seen in failed video stream. But in full 3D.
During the production there were a lot of challenges. The biggest and most tweaked aspect was the actual volume of the visuals themselves and finding the perfect amount of dissolved shapes. Overdoing it would leave us with a cloud of cubes, and too little wouldn’t look interesting. We ended up with a combination of hand animated shapes tweaked towards camera for each shot to keep the sculptural qualities and tempo.
All the people were scanned on set to get a volume to work from. We then created a dice and slice station in Houdini that exported everything for animation in Maya.
