Description

Samsung developed a game based on the arcade classic Space Invaders, in which the player moves between reality and virtual reality. It's called Galaxy Invaders, and it's the first mixed reality game to include both VR and live user interaction on a smartphone.

Execution

On launch day at Zürich's central station, Switzerland's biggest train station, Samsung installed a 50 square meter screen to display the 2D version of the Galaxy Invaders game. And in front of that giant screen, wearing a Samsung VR Gear headset, one player defended his space turf with a laser blaster in the form of the new Galaxy S7. The player's movement on the eight meter platform was tracked by a camera, and that data was fed to the game.

People in the audience at the station were able to follow the action and take control of the Invaders by logging in via Facebook on their smartphones – they could help or hinder the player by choosing power-ups based on the features of the Galaxy S7.

All of this combined to make Galaxy Invaders the first-ever smartphone-based virtual reality game.

Outcome

The results were astonishing. Tens of thousands of people attended the game in Zurich's central station and the live stream was viewed by more than one million people, with an average viewing time of over 3.5 minutes. For a small country with only 8 million inhabitants, this introduction of the new Galaxy S7 really hit its target.

With Galaxy Invaders, Samsung broke down barriers and showed Switzerland – and the rest of the universe – just how capable a smartphone could be.
