The lyrics of this anthem celebrate the savvy attitude shared by each character. We coined the term ‘Give a Flybuys’ to express that attitude. If you care about Flybuys enough to collect points and engage with the program, you take more.
The lyrics are packed with idiosyncratic Australianisms referencing a diverse range of people, sub-cultures and locations. Plus, the thrifty behaviours bragged about are drawn straight from real life, e.g. the “Lord of baggy uniforms” who saves money by letting his kids grow into their clothes.
But this is not a song about being cheap. The self-important titles (“Minister of Freebies” / “I’m the meat pie fiend”) and the free-flowing rambles (“My mate Damo’s out doin’ the windscreen”) give it the swagger of a UK post-punk or grime artist. This serious-yet-self-aware tone was crucial in ensuring the ad didn’t feel like a parody.
