OVERVIEW

Description

When arts and culture meet technology to bring the world’s shared heritage to your fingertips.

Execution

Google Arts & Culture uses data from over 5 million artworks and artifacts from over 1000 museums to help visitors to explore the world’s culture. It was released 1 December 2015 on iOS, Android, and mobile browsers.

When building the app we focused on simplicity; for example, artworks are displayed with a minimal interface while allowing quick access to further detail. However, this simplicity also unlocks access to vast collections of cultural data. For example, with a single tap visitors can organize the works of Monet by color, or sort thousands of Impressionist artworks into chronological order.

Similarly, we integrated several powerful technologies in accessible ways. A single gesture allows users to zoom into high-resolution artworks at brushstroke level, or to take a 3D virtual tour of the museum where an artwork appears—each interaction is carefully designed to transport users in space and time.
