Overview

Background

It all started in 2018. The most beloved ketchup on earth was completing 150 years of existence. So instead of celebrating achievements of the past, we decided to celebrate Heinz's next 150 years, preparing fertile ground for the future. More than a global campaign. A universal campaign. That only an iconic brand like Heinz could make.

Idea

When we talk about the future, we can't help but think about space exploration, colonization of other planets and, of course, Mars.

So, Heinz applied all its expertise in growing tomatoes with the highest standard, taste and quality, but in the most difficult conditions of the universe: the Martian surface.

In partnership between Heinz and the Aldrin Space Institute after three years of research, two greenhouses, seven experimental plantations and 2.5 tons of recreated Martian surface, Heinz achieved its goal and launched the first ketchup made with tomatoes planted under Martian conditions: the Heinz Marz Edition.

A special release, so the Marz Edition was released literally in space.

In the end, the buzz generated over planting on Martian surface had a larger mission. Generate awareness to bring solutions to land degradation still in the present, for the next 150 years in the future.

Mission accomplished.

Strategy

Henry John Heinz used to say: to improve the product in glass or cans, you must first improve it while still in the ground.

To generate awareness to bring solutions to the degradation of land soil still in the present, for the next 150 years in the future, we raised Heinz's production standard and planted a Ketchup in the most difficult conditions known to man to this day: Martian surface.

After more than 7 experimental plantations, 2.5 tons of recreated Martian surface and two built greenhouses, Heinz arrived at a plantation that met all standards of quality, flavor and production of the universe's most beloved Ketchup: the Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Marz Edition.

Execution

Outcome

The Heinz Marz Edition has reached many earthlings:

2.2 billion impressions in 37 countries

10x Earned vs. Paid (Best Heinz result in history)

2328 pieces of global coverage

1.324% more engagement

But in the end, all the buzz created around farming on Mars soil had another hidden and greater intention.

It was to lead a big mission, Heinz is raising awareness and bringing solutions to a major problem: saving earth’s soil from degradation. So in the next 150 years, we will not have to grow on other planets, but on ours.
