Background
In response to record levels of forced displacement, anti-refugee sentiments, and rising levels of discrimination and xenophobia, UNHCR launched their Hope Away From Home campaign. A call for public solidarity and concrete legislative change, the film’s objective was to engage local markets and get people to protect the right to seek safety by signing a petition. The film reached over 35 markets, and 1.2 million signatures were brought to the Global Refugee Forum.
Execution
The main challenge was to connect the three storylines in a way that would emotionally impact the viewer, given the objective of the film. We did this primarily with a slow-motion technique throughout the edit to prolong the visual metaphor when the characters are forced into uncertainty. We also slowed down the music by up to 50% at specific moments, and then ramped it back to normal speed to reflect the lack of control and feeling of uncertainty which permeates the film.
