Background

Every year, Hermès decides upon an annual theme to be expressed through the collections and campaigns they go on to create.

The theme for 2021 was “Odyssey - Long Adventure, Wandering Journey”.

To young men who have yet to experience Hermès, we set out to convey the craftsmanship that Hermès has cherished in the 180 years since its founding, along with the annual theme, expressed in a way that inspires hope in the unknown, precisely because we are now at a moment where we cannot see the future.

Idea

The work is a documentary series titled “HUMAN ODYSSEY”, which follows young creators on their travels.

Seven creators travel to various destinations and visit the workshops where creations such as crafts and traditional art are made.

The travelers represent a variety of creative pursuits: architect, calligrapher, photographer, actor, musician, robot creator, and chef.

Because we are at a moment in history where it’s difficult to travel freely, to give viewers the feeling of “traveling to experience craftsmanship”, we created an authentic documentary without any script or preconceived format.

Strategy

By casting creators who young men, our target, are big fans of, and creating a record of their travels and the process of incorporating the insights gained in their encounters with various craftsmen into their own creations, we sought to create a resonance with our audience through the spirit of cherishing craftsmanship, a core value of Hermes, and spark admiration for the brand.

Execution

On October 14th, 2021, a cinema in Hibiya was chartered for a special screening.

From October 15th, the entire story was released on the HERMES website and on YouTube.

Episodes 1-6 are viewable on the official website and YouTube until December 2022.

Outcome

- A total of more than 2.1 million views on YouTube and the official site.

- Due to its popularity, it was released in theaters, with screenings held at 31 movie theaters nationwide, and many young men who are the target also visited.

- Sales of Hermes Japon in the fiscal year ending December 2021 after the release of the series exceeded 900 million euros, an increase of 76.5% over the previous year.
