Background
Racism, environmental disasters, and terrorism – the world in 2017 is an unsettling place. Studies show two clear trends among young Swedes; they are increasingly worried about the future, and they seek careers that will help make the world a better place. Political engagement among young people is at its highest since the 1970s.
In a world that's increasingly unstable and difficult to navigate, education is the most important tool to create change. But many young people struggle to decide what to study, which in the long run poses a democratic problem – both in Sweden and elsewhere.
The universities themselves are partly to blame; for centuries, they have categorized their degrees and courses by academic discipline instead of explaining how they prepare students to take on the future.
The brief was to position Södertörn University as Sweden's most modern university and to increase the applications among 18-to-30-year-olds in Stockholm.
Execution
Professors and teachers at Södertörn University were asked to categorize all 300 plus educations based on how they can be used to achieve the UN's 17 Global Goals. This formed the foundation for a website where users could select a goal of their choice and be presented with the relevant degrees.
A video was produced to draw visitors to the website. The video showed various current events that concern young people, such as Russian LGBT activists being assaulted, deforestation, and terror attacks. The goal was to show that Södertörn University understands their concerns and offers a solution that can lead to change.
The campaign was circulated on social media and published in Södertörn's own channels.
