Background
The poles are melting faster than ever before. But melting icebergs are simply too far away for society to relate to this global issue emotionally.
With the start of the World Climate Conference, the UN intended to send a message to the world, warning about the danger of climate change in a less judging though effective way. People all over the world should feel able to relate to the global threat of melting icebergs, and be urged to fight global warming.
Description
Together with internationally famous musicians, we produced songs based on the melting sounds of icebergs. This way, we drew attention to the threat of global warming without any media budget – it made countless national and international radio broadcasts. Having turned the hurting truth of melting icebergs into fascinating music, the icebergs were finally heard worldwide.
Execution
Arctic scientists recorded the sounds of melting icebergs by using special underwater microphones. In collaboration with international musicians and artists, we turned these sounds into music. Every artist integrated the sound of the melting icebergs individually und gave his song a personal note. We collected a wide range of different styles–from electronic music to classic. On our interactive website icebergsongs.com, we merged the songs with moving 360° images in dramatic, dark tonality. Thanks to innovative WebGL technology, users get the impression of moving among icebergs while they listen to them, and gain a first hand feeling of what is happening in the far away arctic.
