Background
Not unlike a feature film, this spot was broken down into 3 acts. Due to the fact that the spot has no dialogue whatsoever, our underscore was heavily relied upon, to help narrate the story of the relationship between the boy and the Troll.
Execution
After exploring a multitude of musical styles and approaches, Vapor confidently felt that a crafted and proprietary underscore best served the visual. This allowed us to move seamlessly through a range of emotions, such as fear, tension, relief, and happiness.
The sound design and audio was developed with the same exacting approach as the music, allowing for a comprehensive, balanced mix. Every detail of the sound design was carefully considered. Particularly, around the movements and vocalizations of the troll itself. After extensive experimentation, the sound of the Troll was generated by an actor, and then manipulated in the mix. We feel that we successfully conveyed the emotions of the Troll, without him ever actually speaking a word.
