From its inception, this film has had one score and one only: El Michels Affairs cover of Ol Dirty Bastard’s classic “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” from 1995, re-recorded especially for this project in El Michels Affair’s Brooklyn studio. The music played a huge part in setting the mood for the spot – imbuing a powerful mix of mystery, levity & darkness. We took this modern track and reworked it to create a timeless score. With riffs reminiscent of sirens, the track creates a sense of jeopardy and urgency. The muted trumpet evoces the prohibition era underground jazz scene, and the juxtaposition of dark, alarming trumpet texture and playful voices creates a subversive device that implies transgression—similar to using nursery rhymes in horror films. Overall, the treatment of the music evolved organically with the spot, to create a score that lives and breathes infamy.
