Description

Demonstrate how Internet of Things works, through surprising and entertaining examples that would both intrigue and educate the public. The stunts were filmed and used towards businesses as content.

Using IoT-technology and Telenor’s 4G-net we did three different stunts:

Town Hall bells:

People could play a keyboard on the street and make the city hall bells chime. The City Hall Bells’ ritornellos/melodies are familiar to everyone living in the capital (plays every hour from 7AM till midnight).

Soccer:

People in the city centre could save the exact same penalty shots made by professional football players on the other side of town. Soccer is very physical in nature and has a broad appeal.

Hugs:

People’s hugs made the train station light up with different lights and colours. A hug is an intimate, warm and physical action – quite opposite from “cold” tech.

Execution

The ideas were done as stunts in different hubs around the city. All stunts were filmed and aired both on Facebook, YouTube and Telenor’s own site (in addition to other IoT-cases where Telenor is involved).

Soccer: machines were developed and coupled to existing sensors and technology already available (4G-tech, sensorics). The machines triggered mechanical actions. The machines had to work at the right pace and power. Implemented technology, which was initially intended to do something completely different.

Town Hall: Same 4G technology, but this machine had to simulate the musician’s play, thus mimicking a human being with the same strength, sensitivity and precision.

Hug: Pressure sensors mounted on the body would detect and understand a hug. The duration of the hug sent signals triggering a pre-programmed light show on the wall of the train station. Required large rig with robot / advanced light boxes that would perform a pre-programmed event.

Outcome

A significant increase (+11%) of people regarding Telenor as leading within tech in Norway. Significant because Telenor was already regarded as leading before the campaign aired.

The highest score among telecom companies connected with IoT (twice as high as its main competitor).

Telenor was the “most searched” brand in connection with IoT in Norway.

70.000 started streams on their on site and Facebook organic.
