South Africa has eleven official languages spoken across the land. Some of these languages sonically sound very similar to foreign languages. In this instance we used Se-Pedi, which sounds remarkably similar to Chinese.

From that angle, we went on to have the Kasi Sensei’s performance match the performances of other sensei’s in acclaimed martial arts movies, from the high pitched voice, to their typical behaviour of seeking vengeance from old nemesis, as well as the strictness towards mischievous students.

The Kasi sensei’s Dojo is set up just like the ones in movies, but in his dojo, we had students perform all the soundtracks that you would typically hear in martial arts films. The Kasi Sensei’s makeshift dojo is located in a garage, and much like his teachings that are improvised, the performances and sound design are made up, as opposed to being the real thing.
