OVERVIEW

Background

How do you “own” summer as a Mexican beer brand when your main competitor has made themselves synonymous with beaches and warm weather? If you’re Dos Equis, you create a campaign encouraging drinkers to keep every summer drinking occasion—including pool parties, karaoke and 80s Night at the local club—more interesante with Dos Equis. And you do it by creating a fake 1980s-era music video.

Execution

Music is a quintessential part of summer, and with 80s nostalgia in full swing, Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” seemed like a timeless karaoke classic; it’s filled with recognizable hooks, yet it’s unexpected. The drama and emotion of Tyler’s delivery and the song itself creates some nice tension with the mundane activity of ordering a beer and food at the bar, turning our new version into a truly ridiculous musical experience.
