Overview

Background

Situation: Arabic is one of the most complex languages in the world and even more complex for the 86.4 million people in the region with learning and reading disability.

Brief: Omantel, the national telecom of Oman has always believed in simplifying communication for everyone. So, on the International Day of People of Determination, Omantel was clear in its stand of making Arabic inclusive for everyone.

Objectives: Making Arabic an inclusive language was at the forefront of the Omantel’s commitment. We decided to create the first Arabic dyslexic-friendly font that broke the barriers of disability and made Arabic easier for all.

Idea

We created the first Arabic dyslexic-friendly font – Maqroo (meaning: readable).

It was important to understand how they perceive the fonts so, we worked with the Arabic typeface designers from across the region and analyzed all 650 Arabic fonts with the dyslexic community to track their reading and stress levels. We increased the size of noqat (dots) and tashkeel (glyphs) by 200% and designed each letter to be distinctively recognizable through their irregularities. The font was coded to increase the heights of the letters and made the inner spaces irregular for better readability. Finally, the font was made available for everyone on maqroo.com and it became an instant hit in the community with many typeface designers applying Maqroo rules to their fonts - making the language more inclusive for everyone. Until today Maqroo is downloaded +23K times and is aiding the community.

Strategy

Arabic is one of the most complex languages in the world and even more complex for the 86.4 million people in the region with learning and reading disability. Until now there wasn’t a single Arabic dyslexic-friendly font that made the language easier to read and write for the community. Omantel, the national telecom of Oman has always believed in simplifying communication for everyone. So, with the help of Arabic typeface designers from across the region we analyzed all the available 650 Arabic fonts and created the first Arabic friendly-dyslexic font – Maqroo (meaning: readable). The font was made available for everyone on maqroo.com and made Arabic more inclusive for all.

Execution

We developed and launched the world’s first Arabic dyslexic-friendly font – Maqroo (meaning: readable) on Omantel’s website – maqroo.com. It was supported with a targeted social media campaign that increased the reach of the font.

The font was made available for everyone on the International Day of People of Determination - 3rd December 2023. It immediately became a source of inspiration for other typeface designers in the region and within the first few weeks of the launch the dyslexic community showed its appreciation for the font with +23k downloads.

With a budget of only US$ 30,000, maqroo.com generated heavy traffic and recorded a jump in brand love by 200%.

Outcome

The font achieved maximum success on a very limited budget as compared to other campaigns. It resulted in a significant change in awareness and behavior of many different brands towards the dyslexic community. Prior to the launch of Maqroo, there were 650 Arabic fonts and none of them were dyslexic friendly. Following the launch of Maqroo.com, there was a significant increase in typeface community of the region coming forward and building more inclusive fonts on the principles of Maqroo.
