Description
The spot features a crew of mischievous gnomes, each crafted wholly in CG and each with their own unique individual character.
When a couple leave their suburban home suddenly their garden gnomes come to life and cause havoc in their house. We see the small but mighty figures tormenting a cat, attempt to use a VR headset, ‘baking’ each other in a microwave and a whole host of other outlandish activities.
In the end the couple return to a ransacked house with MediaMarkt products dotted around the home and remnants of a party everywhere.
Execution
This was an unusual, large-scale animation piece which contains a mixture of live action and seamlessly composited photo-real animated gnomes.
The team worked to craft a restricted style of movement that would work for these normally solid objects. Real gnomes are brittle, fragile objects that don't bend and the story required fluid actions from them such as dancing and catapulting. The team had to carefully balance the sense of realism with fun characterful movements and expressions.
The end result came as a consequence of sheer dedication from the artists to deliver a comedic performance within the animation of each gnome, igniting a sense of individual personality.
Not only did the team have to craft over 20 different, photo-real gnomes but a CG cat too. CG cats are notoriously difficult so the team constantly revised the the cat's model to maintain a sense of humour and an acute level of realism.
