Background

In the Philippines, 20 people have been arrested for marching for Pride. An incident that marked Pride marching unsafe for the LGBTQ+ community.

So for Pride 2022, Meta wanted to create truly safe spaces with Instagram Reels using Meta Creator Tools. And ultimately, rally the LGBTQ+ community and allies to express their truths freely and march together for equality safely.

Idea

Together with the community and creators, we created truly safe spaces for people to Pride march, simply by using augmented reality, widely available through social, and easily activated on mobile devices.

Introducing Meta Pride Walkway: Turning any pathway into a walkway for Pride.

Designed together with Filipino creators, the Pride Walkway was an augmented-reality feature made widely available on Instagram Reels. Engineered with easy-adjust floor-mapping technology, it can turn absolutely any kind of space, small, big, medium, straight, slanted, thin, or wide, into a walkway for equality. Creating truly safe spaces everywhere on social.

Strategy

When the safest spaces for the LGBTQ+ are under attack, how do you protect spaces for self-expression and equality? You create new spaces. More spaces.

Equally important, was creating this together with the community and the right LGBTQ+ creators and allies, to give the approach more meaning.

Execution

The Pride Walkway was widely accessible through Instagram Reels, amplified on creator platforms, and ran on the phones of Filipinos. But most importantly it was in spaces, streets, and alleys that all became pathways for equality.

Using Meta Creator Tools, creators kicked it off on Pride day. LGBTQ+ icons and allies got the nation marching, rallying people to turn walkways into pathways for Pride, creating truly safe spaces for equality. Simply through the use of mobile devices.

Outcome

The campaign created truly safe spaces for the Filipino LGBTQ+ on social. Garnering an estimated reach of over 38M, picked up by 42 publications, with over 4.4 million aggregate plays on Reels. Most importantly, zero arrests during Pride.
