Overview

Background

Brazil had one of the highest dengue fever incidences globally with 2.5M cases in 2 years, according to the World Health Organization. A disease transmitted by the female Aedes aegypti mosquito, that breeds in urban areas laying its eggs in places with standing water. QuintoAndar - the largest digital real estate company in Latin America with over 100,000 houses in its portfolio - has as its brand role to help people live better. So our goal was to leverage the reach of our real estate network to fight dengue fever in Brazil in an innovative way.

Idea

As 80% of mosquitoes are born in home's backyards, gardens and sheds, QuintoAndar - the largest digital real estate company in Latin America - teamed up with Oxitec - a global leader in biotech - to fight dengue at its source: people's homes. We used genetically modified mosquitoes engineered by Oxitec to transform our houses into dengue protection points. These mosquitoes are male developed to eliminate their own species. When they mate with females - the ones that bite and transmit the disease - generate only harmless male offspring like themselves, reducing the female mosquito population and consequently, the cases of dengue.

Mosquito Vs Mosquito boxes - containing the mosquitoes' eggs - were given to tenants in the neighborhood with the highest dengue cases. Then, we made the boxes available on our website, creating the largest dengue prevention network in the country and impacting the lives of millions of families.

Strategy

Dengue cases in Brazil have increased steadily for over 40 years. So, we knew that in order to effectively combat the mosquito, we needed an innovative solution. That's why QuintoAndar partnered with Oxitec - a global leader in biotechnology - and brought an efficient and sustainable technology: genetically modified mosquitoes developed to combat their own species.

We leveraged the reach of our real estate network to expand the use of this technology across the country, distributing Mosquito Vs Mosquito boxes to our tenants and making them available to all Brazilians through the campaign's website.

To enhance credibility and spread awareness about the initiative, we had the support of the country's most popular doctor as our spokesperson, Dr. Drauzio Varella. Alongside him, healthcare influencers helped educate the population. More than just raising awareness about the dengue problem, we placed in people's hands the tool to fight it.

Execution

Mosquito Vs Mosquito began its fight against dengue in the city of São Paulo, initially operating in Jabaquara, the neighborhood with the highest number of dengue cases in Latin America. By providing the Mosquito Vs Mosquito box to each of our tenants living there, we were able to protect an area of 2.5 million m². But we wanted this to be a scalable and lasting solution. Then we made the box available on our website so that anyone from all over Brazil could order one.

Outcome

Mosquito Vs Mosquito has been a game-changer in the fight against dengue in Brazil, achieving a 96% success rate in controlling the spread of Aedes Aegypti in treated areas.

Within hours of launching, the results were remarkable, with 60,000 accesses to the landing page, 75% of which were organic. Orders for Mosquito vs Mosquito boxes sold out quickly, creating a waiting queue on day one.

The response on social media was overwhelmingly positive, with 88% favorable comments, (+18 pp vs brand's average). In less than a month, the campaign reached over 29.4 million people, helping spread awareness on an important cause.

The distribution of thousands of boxes has helped protect about 10 million people in an area equivalent to over 2,600 soccer fields. Thanks to influencers and the hashtag #housesagainstaedes, organic social impressions increased to 1.7 million.
