Smoking is one of the most frequent causes of death. GEK Barmer wanted to raise awareness for that problem, and show the people in a big idea what smoking does to the human body. We used the time before New Years Day, the time when you usually make New Year’s resolutions.

At one of the busiest places in the centre of Hamburg, next to the main station and the university we installed a huge project.For maximum impact we chose a huge breathing organism as complex as a lung: a tree. To show, how the toxins contaminate a lung, we did exactly the same with the tree.Black balls arranged in the tree as a lung – made a giant smokers lung. A sign looking like the typical warnings on cigarette packs made the message clear.The installation became talk of town. Several magazines wrote about the giant lung. Furthermore it was on such a prominent place, that tens of thousands of people saw it every day.
