Description
The Oxyride battery is powerful and long lasting. To convey these facts in a surprising and memorable way, we aimed to develop a product that would seem to require huge amounts of energy, yet in fact would run on just two Oxyride batteries. Our answer: a battery-powered car. Not a toy car, but a vehicle large enough to seat a person. We chose to unveil the car in front of the press at the launch event for the Oxyride battery.
Outcome
With the line, "Batteries that move a car", we gave a charge of excitement to a usually staid product launch event. Approximately 250 reporters attended the event, and afterward, more than sixty media outlets ran stories about the new battery. That coverage has an advertising value of around $2.2 million (220,000,000 yen). The massive television and newspaper coverage led to considerable enthusiasm among supermarkets, electronics stores and other distribution channels. As a result, orders for the batteries exceeded Panasonic's initial goal by 500%.
