Background

The official website for Wim Wenders’ most recent film PERFECT DAYS—gaining worldwide attention after receiving the Best Actor Award at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival and nominated for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards—takes a different approach in expressing what the film tries to portray. It explores the various forms of expression that can only be realized on a digital platform.

Idea

This website aimed to create a new form of expression that cannot be achieved through the medium of film. After thorough examination of how the film came to life, what it aimed to portray, and of the film’s cultural values, it became clear that the best way of expressing all of these components on a website platform was to create a “scroll book.”

Strategy

A novel featuring 353 days of Hirayama’s days—apart from the 12 illustrated in the film—were written specifically for the website, allowing viewers to enjoy the contents regardless of whether they have seen the film or not.

Execution

A novel featuring 353 days of Hirayama’s days—apart from the 12 illustrated in the film—were written specifically for the website, allowing viewers to enjoy the contents regardless of whether they have seen the film or not.

Whether on the smartphone or laptop, the page reacts to touch or cursor movement. The words sway and create sounds as the viewers scroll through, gradually immersing the viewers from reality into another world. It is an experience only achievable in the digital platform, stimulating sight, sounds and senses.

Through this entrancing experience the viewers realize the subtle changes within a daily routine. These small waves of change speak volumes to the heart, creating a warm feeling that cannot be put into words.

Outcome

After a month of the film’s theatrical release, the website recorded over 810,000 views and 280,000 users. It also gained various positive feedback on social network platforms. The website created a new form of entertainment for filmgoers where the film experience can be amplified even further even before or after having seen the film.

The film itself has become one of Wim Wenders’ best-selling films, with box office in Japan at 750 million JPY as of the end of January 2024. Since receiving The Best Actor Award at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, the film has been nominated and awarded numerous awards across the globe. It has also been nominated for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.
