Burt Bacharach donated the rights to the song. But to adapt it for our film, we worked with a composer to simplify the arrangement making it simpler and starker.
We also added an additional introductory section to avoid immediately revealing the song’s iconic melody, allowing the meaning of the piece to be slowly revealed as the film unfolds.
To reflect the woman’s fragile emotional state, the composer built in “wrong” notes and tentative pauses to make it feel as if she is slowly remembering a piece learned long ago.
To ensure that the performance felt authentic, we sourced an old Ivers & Pond piano destined for the junkyard.
The actress, who is also a trained piano player, played the piece live. The audio you hear in the finished film is her actual performance captured on the day.
